  1. Published in 2002, but still relevant in 2018, the purpose of this paper was to explore certain elements of pedagogical theory that could provide a framework for empirical research aimed at enhancing practice in online teaching and learning. Learning analytics (then referred to as "data mining") demonstrated that the 14 workers (Proactive Participation Sub-group) attained an average GPA of 5.43, while the 17 lurkers (Peripheral Participation Sub-group) attained an average GPA of 5.41. Given that the academic performance of the lurkers was on average not much less than that of the workers, it seems reasonable to suggest that the notion of learning through legitimate peripheral participation is indeed efficacious.
